Seeking a Sustainable Solution
With the increasing popularity of plant-based diets — such as vegan, vegetarian, and flexitarian — more consumers are searching for plant-based milk alternatives to add to their favourite foods and beverages. However, many of these alternatives are not able to provide the same nutrients as traditional dairy products without added fortification.
Company ethics added another dimension to this challenge for one plant-based meal replacement manufacturer. Not only did they hope to match the vitamin and mineral content of traditional dairy products, but they were also seeking sustainable, plant-based ingredients for their meal replacement premixes.
Prinova’s broad ingredient portfolio, premix capabilities, and application expertise were a perfect solution.
Formulating a Vegan Premix
Prinova worked closely with the customer to refine the product concepts, identify nutritional requirements, and design a fully vegan premix.
In addition to a vegan form of vitamin D3, Prinova recommended a natural, sustainable form of calcium from sea algae called Aquamin. Adding Aquamin enabled the brand to enrich the nutritional profile of their products without disturbing taste or texture, thanks to Aquamin’s neutral flavour and complete solubility.
Delivering Great-Tasting, Sustainable Nutrition
The customer was delighted with the resulting premix, which tasted great and aligned with their brand’s ethical values — including sustainability and a low carbon footprint. It also allowed them to provide certified label claims that resonate with consumers without compromising on nutrition.
